A pair of polymer clay steampunk dragons.

These were made to be wedding cake toppers. But I think librarians may like a little help like this too.

PS. I do commissions!

The Mechanist’s Friend

Posted by: Rachel Ross Tags: ,

He was old, and tired, and ready to quit.
It had been a long life, and a good one – why, at the high point of his career, he had created automata for Kings! And, at the low point, for demons.

But it had been a long life, and no one was interested in little automata now. They had all moved on, found new trivial things to tickle their fancies.

And so he tinkered at his workbench, for lack of anything else to do. And before he knew it, his hands found those tools again. The metal fell into place again, and a tiny creature sprang to life.

He chuckled, as he always did. Tiny newborn thing of gears and wires. Ah, but they always had such searching eyes. Looking for knowledge. Looking to please their masters.

It turned sparkling teal eyes upon him, obediently waiting his command.

Well, he thought, it would be cruel to shuffle off when this little one needs a master…

And so he began again to father another little life.

Tea for One

   Posted by: Rachel Ross Tags: , , , ,

I am having fun with my little (Windsor & Newton Cotman) watercolor set! Especially since I bought a new Koi Waterbrush, and a tube of Lamp Black (The set didn’t come with black because it’s a crutch, by some standards, to use black. This is because most black colors are actually filled with reflected bits of other colors and not black). I have put it all into my Moving Option pen case. (From Jetpens.com)

A Couple in Love

   Posted by: Rachel Ross Tags: , , , , , ,

This was my newest Steam/Mech Dragon commission: two smaller dragons for a wedding cake topper.

It was challenging since they’re comparatively small (3 inches tall) – but it was fun.

Steampunk Gallery

Posted by: Rachel Ross Tags: , ,

I finally put a lot of photos of my more Steampunk-styled pieces into a gallery. There is a tab at the top of this page, but you can also click right here.

I do other styles, but Steampunk is in demand right now. I will expand the gallery later, but I have 18 images so far!

I have decided that I am going to start saving the money I get from commissions, in order to buy a quad-line stunt kite…

Forgotten Fiction 2

   Posted by: Nycteris Tags: , , , , ,

It was a bright sunny day and Nycteris was outside in a dirt-smudged next-next-next-best robe and heavy boots, when a smallish, sleepy, dragonish creature approached her.

“Hail archmage of the polysyllabic and impressive titles that you are required by law to put on your business card.” Nyc turned, shears in hand, to see which smallish dragonish creature it was. She knew rather a lot of them. “What intricate and dangerous ritual are you about to undertake?” continued the dragon.

“I’m pruning the hedges.” She said with the intonation of someone who didn’t entirely enjoy pruning the hedges outside on a windy day when her gravity was radically impaired. One of the hedges had a nasty gash cut through the top due to a strong gust of wind. She would convince it to regrow later. It wasn’t hard; plants like growing, especially if they think they’re getting away with something.

“Don’t you have ethereal minions to do that, or something?”

“Would you trust ethereal minions wandering around enthusiastically with big, sharp pruning shears?”

Sneak Peek of Cute

   Posted by: Rachel Ross Tags: , , , ,

I decided to sit down and draw “a bunch of cute stuff” – here is a sneak peek! Check back for more info – they’ll be going into Etsy! ( http://glimmerville.etsy.com ) Drawing on these little 4×6 inch cards has given me more freedom to draw, er, freely (I say this because I have done this many tonight – for me, this is a lot of drawing.). I know if I mess one up, hey it’s just a little 4×6 card. It keeps me from getting angsty over messing up the inking on a piece I have labored over for hours – because I have only labored over these for minutes. They are also stiff enough to watercolor.

Cute Doodles

Now I need to color them (that’s the hard part, for me). Also I sure hope that the pen I inked with was waterproof. I was not very concerned about it at the time…  I used the free Bic UniBall Super Ink pen that I received in the mail. (Any pen with a really sweet mecha mascot is awesome by default, but it writes very smoothly too.) Hm, the site says it is water resistant. I hope that’s enough for me to put a little watercolor wash over it. We’ll see!

PS. Yes you’re right I could have used the Sailor Recruit I blogged about, because that ink is waterproof as well.
